There are many weeds in my lawn. Which leads me to ask, what is a weed? Just another unwanted, unintended growth where you care enough that it bothers you in some way. The dandelions live among the clover, common plantain, creeping charlie, violets and ultimately, with the much more desirable and ever present Kentucky bluegrass and fescues. Sometimes it’s better to not let these weeds bother me. So I let them be. This way I don’t have to spend enormous time weeding my lawn and money applying herbicides and chemicals.
So then, I am putting them to use, and I’m making dandelion wine. The violets are edible too, and a little sweet, so I threw some in as well. We’ll see how this turns out. I rinsed them, poured boiling water over them, and then they need to steep for a couple days before I strain the mix, add other ingredients and the wine yeast. I’ve never made this before, but I do some home beer brewing, so this shouldn’t be too difficult.
My Dad made dandelion wine a few times while I was growing up. He’d send us kids off to gather blossoms for him so he could make wine. It amazed me that he could do something like that and it changed my idea of what dandelions, weeds and wine could be.
